We had had basically an apartheid system there.

We weren't all brought up, you know, rampant militarists or anything like that.

But I think for any human being, if I could put it that way, personalize it almost.

you know, this is time to fight back.

Good question.

And yes, it's true.

In my priorities and probably in most people's priorities, escape was the number one priority.

But in the meantime, we were involved in a lot of probably self-education, if I could put it that way.

So...

We read an eclectic number of books.

We even tried a bit of Marx and Engels right through to John Smith.

So we learned a lot.

I was well-read at least during that period.

I don't know about now.

We, you know, picked people.

People were doing sometimes fairly short sentences and there was lots of people doing life sentences.

Somebody who tried to escape before, you know, who has a bit of experience.

I tried to escape a few times before myself in England and elsewhere, which is why I was sort of, I suppose, brought into it.

And then the key thing with escapes, actually with any operation outside as well, is a need-to-know basis.

In other words, only people who are involved in the endeavour should know about it.
