I think I was about 35 days in.
It was something like that.
And my whole strategy for survival was basically, I describe it as I died and I dissolved and I was regrown as part of the interconnected web of life.
And what that meant was if I needed something, I would ask Big Mama.
And I'd been surviving on a diet of very small trout and fried worms and fish sperm and beetles and grubs and those sorts of things.
And I knew that I needed to get an animal, but the restrictions on hunting were quite severe.
So no projectiles.
The only way you could catch an animal was to either live trap it, and I didn't have the skill for that, or you had to be able to be close enough to donk it over the head with something.
And I went out on this particular night and I talked to the lake and I said, Big Mama, I'm like, I know I'm here to tell a story and I can't tell it if I'm not here.
So I'm going to need an animal.
And I don't know how this is going to happen, but I'm going to need an animal.
And not long after that, I went out for a pee.
And you've got to understand where my bed was the most uncomfortable bed.
It was like sleeping on a bed of highway rocks.
Nights were 14 hours long.
I'd never sleep for more than about 15 minutes at a time with an hour of being awake.
And so to go out for a wee in the middle of the night, I was in no rush to come back and lie in my bed of rocks.
So I would always, after a pee, sit on this log and talk to the moon and commune and, you know, just have my little hippie heart, you know, chatting to the world.
And all of a sudden, in the darkness, about an hour after my pee...
My body leapt and launched.
