to make me laugh until I pee my pants.
He would make me laugh.
And if there was a sacred cow, he would basically barbecue it every time.
And so sometimes that's what grief would look like.
It would be us, like me in bits, holding my sides, laughing so much.
And then there'd be other times when I'd be tearing the steering wheel off the car, sort of screaming and shouting and
Other times throwing a tantrum at home and howling and then other times just staring at the sky and at the leaves.
And what I learned was that grief demands to be felt.
Grief demands to be felt and in our culture.
We don't have the cultural structures and the ceremonies to be able to hold that well.
And so we're afraid of grief.
We're not given the tools to be able to process it.
But I did have those tools and I wasn't afraid of it.
And because I kept saying yes to it, it didn't build up.
And in any moment...
Grief was never bigger than me.
I was always bigger than it, even if by just a millimeter, but I would still be bigger than it.
And it meant that I could allow it to have its way with me.
And on the other side of that kind of grief is the most incredible presence and joy and love of life and like the lessons, the deepest lessons that it is possible for a human to experience in a body.
