And that started, I think, when I was about 10.

And when I kind of sort of had my first foray into rescuing a sick or an injured bird.

And in our local small country town, people knew me as the bird girl.

So they would bring their sick or injured birds because I was the weird bird girl.

And I would keep them in little socks in my wardrobe because a bird will very quickly die if it shocks.

But if it's in a sock, it kind of regresses and thinks that it's in its mother's nest.

It thinks it's under its mother's belly and it's in a nest.

And it just goes very quiet and placid and docile.

But it also will then imprint on its carer because it's gone back to being a baby bird.

And so I would then be its mother and it would think that I was its mother.

So then it would, you know, I'd take it out and it would sit, they'd sit on me.

And when I'd let them go, I'd go out of the house and they'd just land on my head or, yeah.

You'd take them to school?

What was that like?

Yeah, I'd take them to school because you've got to feed a baby, don't you?

And little baby birds need to be fed every couple of hours.

So I would take them to school either in a pocket or in a bag and then I would feed them.

And the easiest way to feed a baby bird is the same way that a mother feeds a baby bird, which is to spit the food into the baby bird's mouth.

And if you don't do that, you've got to get syringes or you've got to get paddle pop sticks and you can actually get it into the wrong place in the bird and kill it.

And so I would just chew up the food, whatever it was, and then I would spit it into the bird's mouth and the baby bird would go, chuck, chuck, chuck, chuck, chuck.
