Yeah, well, there was a whole street of people, you know, many streets, but one that we kind of zeroed in on where everyone had their homes destroyed.
A lot of folks moved to the mountains because it's kind of like a safe haven in terms of weather.
We don't have tornadoes.
We don't have horrible snowstorms.
And this was in the town of Swannanoa, a valley town that was just outside of Asheville.
There were so many of these small communities in North Carolina.
So I really didn't think too much of flooding.
I definitely didn't anticipate things to be nearly as bad as they actually became.
Liz Barker and her daughter had moved into this house.
Now, it was across a highway and above the Swannanoa River.
So it didn't feel, certainly, like a place where they needed to have flood insurance.
And it was not.
in FEMA's flood hazard zone.
And so when asked Liz Barker, who's a single mom, do you want to purchase flood insurance for a couple hundred dollars a month, she thought no.
Being a single parent, I'm like, I just can't afford $200 a month for something where the risk is infinite.
Incredibly low.
Because that was all she was presented with was you're not required to get this flood insurance, but would you like some?
And many of us, you know, do you want your travel, your trip insured?
No.
I don't want to pay another $60 or $100 when I just bought whatever it is.
