I was a prosecutor in the courts of Washington, D.C.
for 24 years, both federal court and local court, because we're the only U.S.
attorney's office in D.C.
of the 93 U.S.
attorney's offices around the country and in the territories.
That are not only the federal prosecutors, but we're the local prosecutors because there are no district attorneys in the District of Columbia.
It's a federal city.
So we did it all.
So we worked protest cases as prosecutors.
And what I can tell you is the overwhelming majority of arrests that are made at protests.
No charges are ever brought.
It's called no papering the case.
We don't have the capacity to do it.
And most people, there is a really strong argument that they're exercising their constitutional First Amendment rights when they were placed under arrest.
Now, if you assault a police officer, you're throwing rocks, you're throwing bottles, you're no, then all bets are off.
Don't do that because that's a crime.
But if you're taken into custody, don't don't fight.
Because here's the other thing that I learned as a career prosecutor.
Police have a very difficult job to do.
And I have always been a big police supporter.
