Uh, you know, later in the game, the one that Joey threw to him, he ran a little out and up route and almost scored and a kind of ball fell loose.
Well, right before that play, another receiver is about to go in and he starts running on the field and I'm screaming on the headset, get him back out, because I know Trevor's the guy who's got to run this route.
So those guys did a great job getting that thing executed.
So when you ask about the operation, there's it's I would say all eleven guys on the field, but it takes all eleven plus everyone on the sideline and all the coaches to to get that
It was good to get the team reps together with a bunch of different groupings out there, saw a bunch of different guys in different situations, first down, second down, third down, a little bit of red zone work, two-minute work. And like I said, guys in different positions and put in different spots and having to string drives together. So it was good to see the guys go out there, communicate, compete, play fast, play together, all those things that we kind of preach. And you try to create in these controlled settings, but getting into more of a mock game, you really see it come to life.
I know the next day is kind of, you know, going over a little bit, you know, the day before the walkthrough. Have you seen guys kind of take that out there today and already show improvements where you guys want to see it? I think so. And I think not only from the walkthrough to the practice, you see the accumulation of reps week to week or even from the spring to the fall, which is encouraging to see the guys even be able to call back to a way they ran a certain route in the fall or excuse me, in the spring and take it to how they're going to approach it going into the fall.
and say, I saw this look this one time in OTAs, or I saw this in phase two, or we talked about this adjustment earlier when we were still in the acclimation period a couple weeks ago, and they're able to retain those things. That's encouraging because you know they're studying, they're working at it, we're continuing to walk through those looks, talk about those looks, study those looks. And those are the things that separate us on critical downs when it's third down and there's crowd noise out there. Being able to execute those adjustments, those small changes when it's under pressure is such a big deal for us moving into year two.
A lot. That's a great question. It's an excellent point about the room in general because I think from the top down, from the leadership of Jacoby and Parker and BT and that group that's typically going with the ones and Travis and Josh and CJ, like all the way down to the rookies and even Trevor and some of those guys that are playing with Joey and Carter and Nick, you have a group of guys that are football guys, and I know that's a little bit cliche, but guys that are ate up with football and playing the receiver position and working on their craft.
mastering the offense and learning the nuances of lining up here and taking this split and adjusting this route a certain way, just like I talk about, knowing the difference in the way we run a route versus a certain look that we got in the spring versus how we're going to run it in the fall versus a different look. It's rare at times to have one or two guys in a room that are that into football and that into their craft
going out there in two or three different groups, let alone have them all in the same room. So it's a special group for me to coach, for EB to coach, and the rest of the guys. I know the quarterbacks love having guys like Tram out there.
like I said, so focused on their craft and have been so diligent with the way they study, which makes it nice for me because a lot of times in preseason you're going out there and just trying to get kind of the basic plays snapped and executed and see if guys can go out there and communicate. Now there will still absolutely be an element of that where we want to be able to find out what we have with those guys. So I understand going into it that
We always go out and compete every single time we're going out there to play, whether it's a seven on seven or a preseason game. But we know that there are other things we want to accomplish to set ourselves up and set each player up for success going into the season. So we'll put together a call sheet and a game plan accordingly so we can see what these guys can do and let them go out there and hopefully compete and have some fun. How do you approach that? I mean, is this like your Super Bowl?
I don't know that I would quite frame it like that. I think more than anything I'm excited to see these guys go out and compete against somebody else. It's really not about me or the plays I call because these are the plays we've been practicing and it's such a collaborative effort to put together a list of plays that the guys know and are comfortable with that we can go out there and run.
And then really see what the guys can do. Give them the opportunity to go out and showcase their talent. So it's not really about the plays that I call. And I know that going into it. And it's a, like Leah mentioned, maybe a little bit tighter menu or different menu that we might carry going into a game plan. But I'm just looking forward to seeing those guys go out there and runs the runs that we've practiced a hundred times against our defense and do it live with tackling against somebody else.
That's a great question. I think you learn a lot about not only the timing and the process. You always go through that simulation on the sideline, even in real games.
having a real feel for the personnels and substitutions. You have injuries. You're trying to manage the game. You're trying to get different looks. So at some points, you're kind of even managing more things than you would be in a normal game because you're just trying to get the first down or manage a game or finish a drive where you're going into preseason game and saying, well, there's a couple of things we got on our checklist that we want to see a certain guy do a certain thing or get a certain look or get a certain play rep. So trying to juggle and balance that was a great experience. And I think ultimately one of those things that you need the reps of going through and live
just like a quarterback, just like a receiver, live bullets flying to really get that down. Brent, on the O-line, you've had to do some juggling this week out of necessity. How beneficial will that end up being in the long run? Yeah, you hit the nail on the head. It will be beneficial because I know I say it every time. You guys are probably sick of hearing me say it, but we know that you're not going to have the same five-star in an offensive line
for every single rep of every single game. I mean, if you do, you're incredibly fortunate, and that'd be extremely rare. So we are fortunate to have guys. You see Jonah playing inside at center, at guard. You got guys playing left and right at the tackle station. You got tackles who can play guards, guards that can play tackle, guards that can play center.
We've had tackles who have taken snaps at center. So we're fortunate to have that flexibility. We just need to continue to build the communication and make sure that each iteration of the offensive line is as cohesive as that first unit. And that's something we'll continue to work probably throughout camp, even probably throughout the whole year. Whether we like it or not, we're going to continue to work different groupings, different guys working together. Jeff and Brian have put a big emphasis just on their chemistry and that connection. Have you seen that carryover now that the pads are on, now that you're deeper into camp?
I think so. I think it's similar to what we talked about with the development of guys from the spring into the fall or year one to year two. We know that that progress is never going to be a straight line, but I think you see the route tree continuing to develop the chemistry, the timing,
