How did the inner‑squad scrimmage reveal the team's progress and communication?
All right, you guys are ready. All right, so you guys had the inner squad scrimmage the other day. How did the guys look out there and what did you kind of see?
It was good to get the team reps together with a bunch of different groupings out there, saw a bunch of different guys in different situations, first down, second down, third down, a little bit of red zone work, two-minute work. And like I said, guys in different positions and put in different spots and having to string drives together. So it was good to see the guys go out there, communicate, compete, play fast, play together, all those things that we kind of preach. And you try to create in these controlled settings, but getting into more of a mock game, you really see it come to life. I know the next day is kind of, you know, going over a little bit, you know, the day before the walkthrough. Have you seen guys kind of take that out there today and already show improvements where you guys want to see it? I think so. And I think not only from the walkthrough to the practice, you see the accumulation of reps week to week or even from the spring to the fall, which is encouraging to see the guys even be able to call back to a way they ran a certain route in the fall or excuse me, in the spring and take it to how they're going to approach it going into the fall.
and say, I saw this look this one time in OTAs, or I saw this in phase two, or we talked about this adjustment earlier when we were still in the acclimation period a couple weeks ago, and they're able to retain those things. That's encouraging because you know they're studying, they're working at it, we're continuing to walk through those looks, talk about those looks, study those looks. And those are the things that separate us on critical downs when it's third down and there's crowd noise out there. Being able to execute those adjustments, those small changes when it's under pressure is such a big deal for us moving into year two.
Austin Trammell had a really good day today. I think he had two long touchdown catches. Just what does it say about the receiver room in general that you have a guy like that as a backup right now?
A lot. That's a great question. It's an excellent point about the room in general because I think from the top down, from the leadership of Jacoby and Parker and BT and that group that's typically going with the ones and Travis and Josh and CJ, like all the way down to the rookies and even Trevor and some of those guys that are playing with Joey and Carter and Nick, you have a group of guys that are football guys, and I know that's a little bit cliche, but guys that are ate up with football and playing the receiver position and working on their craft. mastering the offense and learning the nuances of lining up here and taking this split and adjusting this route a certain way, just like I talk about, knowing the difference in the way we run a route versus a certain look that we got in the spring versus how we're going to run it in the fall versus a different look. It's rare at times to have one or two guys in a room that are that into football and that into their craft
going out there in two or three different groups, let alone have them all in the same room. So it's a special group for me to coach, for EB to coach, and the rest of the guys. I know the quarterbacks love having guys like Tram out there.
I think it's the only time we're going to talk to you this week. So can you talk a little bit about play calling on Saturday in a preseason game and especially with lots of young players on the field? I mean, what's your approach? What do you expect to get on Saturday against the Saints with as many young guys as you're going to have likely? Yeah, absolutely. Looking forward to it. And part of it is because I have that group of guys to call plays for that are guys that are
like I said, so focused on their craft and have been so diligent with the way they study, which makes it nice for me because a lot of times in preseason you're going out there and just trying to get kind of the basic plays snapped and executed and see if guys can go out there and communicate. Now there will still absolutely be an element of that where we want to be able to find out what we have with those guys. So I understand going into it that
