and the understanding of the quarterback and receiver, whether it's the quarterback knowing the receiver's gonna win on a certain route a certain way, or the receiver knowing the quarterback is gonna put a ball on a certain location versus a certain look. When you have that down and you don't need to think about it and you don't need to communicate verbally, pre-snap every single play based on a look, that increases your chance of execution significantly. And I think you see that at times out there. Certainly something we're gonna continue to work on, but it's been exciting to see it come to fruition when it has.
Anything stand out through 10 days about Trevor? Anything moving forward? I'm probably going to give you the boring answer. The things that always stand out to me are the things that make you love coaching a guy like Trevor so much, and that's who he is first and foremost as a person, as a leader, his consistency, his work ethic.
his discipline, his attitude, his mentality with which he plays every play. He studies the play but comes in and prepares. Those things are so special to me as a coach, and those things are the things you might not always see on the field. So he may have days where his completion percentage might be lower than other days, but as coaches are so committed to the process that it's still such a joy to see him come in here and prepare and work so hard and study and try to improve every single day, not taking a single detail for granted. It's so easy, even for me, to assume we've done this before. We can relax on this.
I would like to say hopefully not too complex. I would like to have the best balance of complexity where we can attack defenses in a variety of different ways and put our guys in optimal situations with enough simplification where our guys can go out there and play fast. So I don't know if there's a way for me to quantify how complex it is, but it's certainly a balance that we're trying to strike. We want to be able to attack defenses in a variety of ways, but still keep it simple enough for guys to play fast.
I love, Vorkic is another guy who you love his attitude. I mean, you see him in there in the huddle, and we're at the end of this practice. It's hot out. It's humid. Everyone's sweating. Everyone's dying. And he's got the biggest smile on his face, ready to call another run play in 13 personnel where we've got three tight ends out there. And the defense knows it's a run. We know it's a run. It's going to be a physical, violent play, and he can't be more excited to do it. So those are the things that fire you up seeing a guy like that with how eager he is to approach every single play.
A lot of self-scouting at this time. What's kind of the biggest thing you want to see out of the guys over the next few days? There are so many things that we're trying to get out of the guys in different drills and team situations out here, but
It's really overarching when you've said the biggest things are the overarching concepts that we look at in the spring are really the same concepts we're looking at in the fall. Now we just have the pads on and they're in a different setting and doing it. So we're still looking at the fundamentals. We're still looking at playing fast. We're still looking at playing attacking. We're still looking at our play style, all the things that Liam probably talks about the team up here and who we are as our play style, our identity as an offense. Those are always the biggest things, no matter the setting we're in. Now, is there more to it because now we're able to practice different blocks in the pads? Absolutely. Absolutely.
The deep reception was awesome to see.
It's great getting him back out there with the guys.
He has such an infectious energy that it affects not just the receivers, probably the offensive line coaches and everybody out there.
He's continuing to progress from a route, technique, fundamental standpoint, but also a knowledge of the offense and just the system in general.
So it's exciting to see, and that development will hopefully continue.
What does he add when he's right and out there to what you want to do?
There's so much that he adds, and I think it starts with, like I said, the energy in his play style and what he brings to the huddle, which you don't always see.
On the field, it's probably a little bit more apparent that when he has the ball in his hands, he can create something special.
He can make guys miss.
He has a great awareness of defenders and space out there on the field, but he also has great ball skills.
So those things kind of pop off the tape, but the other elements of it with the details that he tries to execute, his run assignments, alignment splits, those stuff don't always show up on tape, but those are impactful really for the entire offense.
Certainly.
I think not just for him.
