The more time that we spent with these cases with the victims of misconduct, the more the picture developed that the industry is in a crisis.
Policing is in a crisis.
It's deeply affecting both the officers that are doing the work and also the communities that they police.
And we hopefully identify solutions that can draw these communities closer together.
There was just an article in the Times Magazine this week about how more officers die every year from suicides than actually in the line of duty.

You're surrounded by a lot of like minded, usually investigators in their 20s with usually liberal arts backgrounds who want to improve their community, who want to learn about the basics of civil rights, how policing works and how to mesh those two together.
I, it was a culture shock.
You know, one of the stories in the book is Mac and I going to the police cabin together and feeling like we stepped into another planet.
I think that what we learned about the blue wall- Can you tell me about that?
yeah i think that we we saw a lot of uh behavior that initially didn't seem to make sense that we over the course of really really writing the book uh traced a lot of it back to the uh the roots of the police department which go back to uh you know nypd is the oldest police department in america depending on who you're talking to from boston uh goes back to the metropolitan police
1825, but most critically was shaped by waves of Irish immigration in the late 1800s after the Irish potato famine.
There's been this emerging scholarship about the Irish influence on the NYPD.
And also, you know, we quote former deputy commissioners of the NYPD who say that
The, you know, John Timoney has said that the blue wall of silence has its roots from that he knows being an Irish schoolboy.
It goes back to years and years of fighting colonial repression.
