They have a lot of talent and engineering and scientific resources of their own.
And plus, they have the second largest internal market in the world after the United States.
Companies and countries that want to sell to that market will have to have a relationship with China.
Exactly.
You don't just sort of like say goodbye to all that.
And you do not find all the assets that you have in China that easily in other countries.
So I think one thing that might happen is that multinationals may end up basically having two supply chains, one to serve the U.S.
market, one to serve the China market.
You might see, for example, some companies like Apple deciding they have to assemble some phones in the United States to escape American tariffs.
We already have companies transferring some technology, some cloud computing, for example.
A lot of American companies are now required to store their data in China to adhere to Chinese laws.
increasingly you might actually have companies establishing these segregated operations to serve those two spheres of interest.

Right.
So everybody, whether you're an investor or a policymaker, has to consider what your baseline scenario is and then consider how you could be wrong.
And the baseline scenario is that inflation, which is a little bit below 2% now, moves up to 2% and basically stays there.
And it kind of makes sense.
But what I want folks to do is look at a bunch of things that are happening in the economy today and raise some consideration of the possibility that inflation could actually head up through 2% and keep going.
I'm not saying it should be your baseline scenario, but there's enough stuff happening out there that it seems like a bigger risk than people realize.
