Can't say that I have.

So Land Run Day is a nearly ubiquitous experience for Oklahoma students from the 80s, 90s, and I think it might have even still been happening into the early 2000s.

The practice has since died out.

I am going to approach the following very carefully.

This was the narrative presented to us when I was in fourth grade and participated in my school's land run day.

This is not representative of what actually happened in history, is incredibly revisionist and glosses over the horrors that came of the 1890s.

Oklahoma was primarily settled by land runs.

Bunch of white people lined up with their covered wagons and a gun went off and they rode like the Dickens and they claim claimed homestead land that would be their new homes.

They were allowed to develop this however they chose.

That's how Oklahoma was settled.

That is not the history of how Oklahoma was settled.

Oklahoma's settlement was incredibly brutal, bloody, unfair, and racist, just for the record.

Okay.

There were a series of treaties that we ignored, made more treaties than we ignored.

Then there was the whole trail of tears that I in no way want to diminish with my incredibly diminishing tone.

Okay, all of this was happening, filtering into Oklahoma.
