Basically, there is a recognition that we need to spend a lot more money on defence.
You know, talk to anybody in this country who's anywhere near the military and they will talk about how far the British military has declined in terms of capability in recent decades.
This kind of turn away from more conventional warfare 25 years ago.
And, you know, now we're realizing that we've got a pretty big gaping hole.
And what many people are arguing for now is a more kind of, I mean, A, more money, of course.
And one of the big questions is where is this money going to come from?
I mean, that's the big question that Burnham is going to have to face, right?
Is we do need to spend more on defense, but how?
where is that going to come from?
It's not that easy to just lock money off, right?
But they've clearly got to find it from somewhere.
So that's the sort of political question.
I mean, that's the foundation of it all, right?
One of the problems is...
This came from a friend of mine who's also a journalist.
I won't take credit for it, but I think it's really interesting.
So he was working with a think tank looking at how you get universities together to sort of approach defence development and innovation.
And one of the ideas is that you have a sort of group of universities that get some kind of research funding and that acts as the sort of basis for innovation in the industry.
Sounds like a great idea, doesn't it?
The problem is, particularly on the left, as soon as you say defence industry to a lot of people, they just go up in arms and are just automatically against it.
