Okay, so in an all-capitals important announcement made by Nigel Farage on X yesterday afternoon, the Reform Party leader announced that he will resign as Clapton's MP, triggering a by-election which, wait for it, he will stand in. He wants the people of Clapton to decide, the people who won him the seat with a majority of nearly 8,500 in 2024. And the announcement has come amid a row over Nigel's financial support and undeclared gifts and benefits received by supporters over the last few years. First, it was the £5 million so-called unconditional gift from the crypto billionaire Christopher Harbourn, revealed back in April. And more recently, undeclared benefits, including staff and security, supplied by close friend and convicted criminal George Cottrell, a.k.a.
Posh George. So if that wasn't enough bad news for Nigel, on Wednesday morning, The Guardian then reported that his £5 million gift from Harbourn was actually reported to the National Crime Agency by bankers who were concerned it may have been laundered money. So listen, Zoe, you've been following this story very closely. I hope you're well having to digest all of this. Let's just back up for a minute. Okay. So it definitely seems like Nigel's mask has slipped a bit. He is not necessarily coming across as the jovial man. You want to have a pie win in the pub. He seems quite angry. He was quite curt with Sky reporters. And, The things he's talking about, you know, the right to make money and all this sort of business, is undermined by the fact that criminal agencies were looking into this money.
Why would he want to trigger a by-election then? Well, OK, so you're absolutely right that Nigel Farage has essentially gone from, man, apparently some people want to have a drink in the pub with, to pub ball, essentially. So yesterday, his speech... It was about 15 minutes of ranting and raving and he was furious and he was, everyone was out to get him. The establishment was out to get him. The media were out to get him. He was going for the journalist, you know, specific journalist who he said had doorstepped his daughter and he was the, he called himself the most attacked person a politician. I mean, all these extraordinary claims. And then he somewhat buried the lead. Right at the end of this 15 minutes, he essentially said, so I'm going to be resigning, triggering a by-election and standing in it again, because this by-election is going to be the people versus the establishment.
He essentially wants it to be a referendum on him.
