And I think the word defense is an amorphous one, right?
Because, you know, famously, the sort of core of NATO is Article Five, right, which is this mutual defense agreement.
If one ally is attacked, then all will come in to defend them.
Where it gets tricky is what do you define as attacked?
And if there's provocation before that attack, is that still an attack that means that everybody should pile in?
Right?
So, I mean, with the case of Afghanistan, you can make the point that...
okay, there was an attack on the US and therefore this was a defensive action.
Of course, we now know there was huge overstep and mission creep and all kinds of things going on with that.
But I think if we come forward to today, I mean, that was more than 20 years ago, 25 years ago, bloody hell.
We're in a different world.
We're just in a completely different security paradigm.
Back then...
Western armies and intelligence services suddenly reconfigured themselves to be focused on asymmetrical warfare, on non-state actors, on this kind of warfare that was fought against al-Qaeda and other Islamist groups in the Middle East.
And over the past few years, they've had to realign again back to a more kind of traditional sort of threat, which is threat coming from state actors, principally Russia, Vladimir Putin's Russia, threatening other states with very sort of...
bar a few sort of details, it's pretty much the same as the song.
This is, you know, it's war as it's kind of always been fought, right?
I mean, I can't see a point where other NATO countries would join that.
They've got absolutely no reason to.
In fact, they're condemning it.
