So she went to Malaysia to have a treatment called hypothermia, which is a treatment that happens in alternative medicine circles for things like cancer, for things like Lyme disease.

What they do is they heat your body up to 42 degrees and they keep it there for a few hours before cooling it down.

Mechanics are simple.

They kind of make the body too hot for any parasites or pathogens to survive.

It began, you know, as an experimental therapy.

It does occasionally form part of the treatment plan of people with very advanced stage cancers, but they don't ever really heat the body to that extreme temperature.

And it's sort of done with...

warm chemotherapy solutions as part of like a really aggressive cancer treatment plan.

So what these alternative medical practitioners do is sort of take that science and really ramp it up to 11 in a very simplified way.

And that's what happens to Lauren.

What led her there?

Often the other place people go to get this particular therapy is Germany.

And Germany, there's

significantly greater cost that comes with going to Germany for that.

Also the travel, Lauren was unwell.

So Malaysia is cheaper and it's closer.

So a lot of Australians, I've discovered to my horror, have gone to Malaysia to have this.

Lauren had had a string of diagnoses over the years.

The first one that she received was chronic fatigue syndrome, and that would have been when she was a late teenager.
