It was an unknown number, which normally she wouldn't answer, but that weekend in particular, she was on high alert, knowing that her older daughter, Bree, was competing in this ski-cross, high-risk, downhill race.
Jennifer wanted to be reachable at all times in case Bree or her son were injured.
Jennifer had mentally prepared herself to get a call about an injury.
But this?
This was something she never could have imagined.

Panic surged through her.
Jennifer and the other dance parents flew into action.
Someone called 911.
Another mom sat silently beside Jennifer, listening into the phone call.
All the while, Jennifer didn't want the man on the phone to know that she was around other people and that they had called the police.
