Jennifer called the police, expecting that there might be officers already on their way to the scene.
But it turns out they hadn't dispatched an officer because they realized it was a scam call.
The reality sunk in that this had all been a ruse.
These men never had her daughter.
In fact, they probably didn't know much about her at all.
Jennifer would come to realize that she had been a victim of an AI voice scam.
Someone had used AI to generate the voice of a young woman in distress.
And it sounded exactly like her daughter, Bree.
This type of scam is becoming more common with the accessibility of AI.
All it takes is a few seconds of someone's voice that can be taken from the internet, such as a social media site, and fed into an AI platform for someone to generate entire sentences in a voice that sounds just like that person.
Fortunately, Jennifer was with a group of people when this call came in, and she took quick action by calling the police and getting in touch with her daughter.
But often that's not the case, and it's really easy to fall for a scam like this.
Once it happened to Jennifer, it seemed like everywhere she looked, she heard stories of people in her community who'd experienced something similar.
Although the local police couldn't do much to help in the moment, Jennifer filed a report anyway.
She wanted what had happened documented in case it happened again.
She also couldn't shake the unsettling thought that these scammers seemed local.
They had asked for her location.
They claimed they were sending a white van to pick her up.
And then, sometime later, another scam with similar details surfaced in the Phoenix area.
That's when Jennifer heard from the police again.
