He's, you know, he's the man of many ways.
That's the whole first line.
Like he's polytropos.
So you can read in multiple ways.
And Shakespeare, and I think particularly this play, lends itself because it's so disorienting and because there's all of these contrasts and reversals and because there's magic and chaos, it invites you.
It almost feels like Shakespeare's like, I dare you.
to like interpret this as you will, right?
Because the whole point is that apprehension is more powerful than comprehension.
Well, he says that in that speech, that famous speech, right?
Lovers and madmen have such seething brains that apprehend more than cool reason ever comprehends.
So the madman and the lover are either...
like either their organs of perception are so distorted that they cannot see what is true, right?
It's more strange than true, he says.
Or else they are seeing clearly and those of us who are stuck in the world of comprehension are not.
Thank God.
I hope you get to tell Shakespeare that someday.
