China has become an unquestioned force on the world stage, and Beijing has been increasingly clear in its intentions to reshape the international order.
But China has still been hesitant to take on some of the costs that other great powers have assumed in upholding their preferred vision of world order.
And now, at a time of tremendous change, the tensions between Beijing's ambitions and its cost aversions may be coming into closer focus.
And to unpack these contradictions, I am really excited.

Sam is a senior fellow at the Center on US-China Relations at the Asia Society and a research fellow with China Heritage, and he recently published a really interesting article on some of these topics in foreign affairs titled China Was Ready for the Age of Anarchy: Why Turbulence Will Make Beijing More Assertive.
