That's the one case that people focus on.
And I think it's an extremely unusual case.
I don't think in general what people say about it is right.
But I think no matter what, you should not be focusing on that case.
I think it's a very bad example of thought experiments and philosophy because it has so many peculiar features.
So I think a very realistic case is Perry's case or set of cases.
In the paper, the essential indexical, most of us know those.
They're incredibly influential.
They're fantastic cases in a way.
They brought our attention to very, very important features.
They've generated incredibly interesting literature and so on and so forth.
And there are cases in the most straightforward way.
And so to remind the listeners of the most famous one of those, it's Perry walking around in the supermarket eating
He's noticing a messy shopper.
He's thinking, that shopper needs to rearrange the bags in his cart.
Not realizing that he's the messy shopper, he wanders around looking and looking.
And it's only at the point where he realizes, I am the messy shopper, where there's an emphasis on I, that's when he stops and starts rearranging his own shopping bags and clean up after himself.
Yeah.
And so...
And so Perry's question is, what happened here?
