Because I wasn't grieving at that moment just for me not having my mom there.
I realized I'm also grieving for my daughter who will never know her maternal grandmother.
And now I'm grieving for my mother who will never get to meet her first grandchild.
Sorry, I'm getting old.
No, I understand.
It was really emotional because I felt like I'm grieving in three different directions and I'm full of postpartum hormones.
It's not a good situation, which is, by the way, if any OBGYNs are listening or any pediatricians, really important for them to know that this kind of grief in a woman who's lost her mother looks a lot like postpartum depression, but it's different.
And I've met quite a few women who've been diagnosed and treated for PPD when they said what I was experiencing was a surge of grief over missing my mom.
How do you know the difference?
Is it because you're dealing with somebody who does not have a mother?
Pediatricians, OBGYNs, ask your patients, did you lose a mother when you were young?
Or look at the medical records and see and consider that as a possibility.
Only a couple of years.
A couple of years after the book was out.
Three years.
What did you do?
What did you do to get through that?
I reached out to other women I knew who didn't have mothers, and especially ones whose children were older.
And I said, tell me what you did.
Tell me how you felt, just so that I didn't feel like I was going through it alone.
