Right, right.
But in real life, the life that we're, you know, the life we are, the...
existence we all share now, you're not ever going to have to make that choice.
So it's okay to feel grateful and happy that a tragedy led to some positive outcomes.
I would feel.
Sure.
Well, there's all the what ifs.
We can't help, you know, go through the litany of what ifs and how my life might be different if my mother had lived.
It's all theoretical, of course, but it's natural for the, I think the human mind to wonder, could I reframe something about guilt though?
Because I find that this helps a lot of the daughters that I work with.
You can do anything you want.
This is your time.
Well, it's the distinction between guilt and regret because they're really two very different constructs.
Guilt is often what we feel as a result of a choice we made, something we did or didn't do, and we often feel guilt when we've made a choice that's out of alignment with our own integrity and doesn't feel that it corresponds with who we know we are or believe we are or want to be.
It's very much related to choices that we make or don't make.
Regret is something different.
Regret is a feeling we have when something happens that it's outside of our control and we are hurt or unhappy with the outcome.
So here's an example.
I might be working with a daughter who's struggling with a lot of guilt because she got the phone call that her mom is dying and she didn't make it back in time because the plane was delayed or the flight was canceled.
And she feels this terrible guilt that she wasn't there to say goodbye to her mom.
