They suddenly thought, OK, Ian knows what he's doing.
And so they marketed my next book.
They put a bit more muscle behind it.
And that was my first book to hit the top 10.
So it was like 14 or 15 published novels before I was getting into the top 10.
Well, I mean, you know, I'm glad it didn't come too early.
Otherwise, I'd have been crazy.
I'd have been buying gold helicopters or whatever.
But no, it's good.
What it means is, you know, you're cushioned from the kind of the day-to-day stresses of the world.
when success comes.
But also, you know, when nobody's interested in you, you've got all the time in the world to write.
When you suddenly become a success, you're doing a lot of touring, you're doing a lot of interviews, you're doing a lot of stuff that isn't right in the books.
So writing the books actually gets pressed into a smaller and smaller compartment.
So it's got swings and roundabouts, but I'd rather be successful than not successful.
Absolutely, yeah.
I think it did.
I mean, I did what I always do with my books.
I use my books to try and, you know, work through issues I've got or big questions I've got about the way the world is or the way humanity is or the way life is.
And, you know, in the very next book I wrote, I put Rebus's daughter in a wheelchair because I'd been told that my son died.
