I should be studying something I'm passionate about.

And the thing I was passionate about was literature.

So I had to break the news to them that I was going to study literature rather than accountancy and economics.

And he said, well, what kind of job are you going to get with that?

And I thought, well, I'll become a teacher.

I'll come back to Fife and become an English teacher.

All the teachers at my high school had all come from that area, gone off to college, teacher training college, and then come back and were teaching.

I thought, well, that's what I'll do.

And I'll sit and write lovely love poems in my classroom of a late afternoon and, you know, might get them published in small magazines.

That was the plan.

Well, when I got to uni, of course, things changed because suddenly it wasn't so much the subject that was interesting to me.

It was all the extracurricular activities.

Yeah, I mean, I was surrounded by people at Edinburgh who were from different social classes, obviously, but all they were creative.

They wanted to be musicians, they wanted to be poets, they wanted to be film directors or actors or try and put stuff on, try and create a magazine.

It was the era of punk.

And I think punk was very important to me in that it said, doesn't matter where you're from, just if you want to try and do something, just do it.

And we were all trying to become something.

And that was very exciting.

Anyone could do it.

You know, I mean, what punk said was just learn these three chords, get yourself a cheap guitar and off you go.
