um i couldn't play three chords so that was a that was a false start but i did write lyrics uh mostly for bands that didn't exist um those morphed into poetry so i was writing poetry for a while thinking i was going to be a poet um i was just tinkering i was trying out different things uh uh and you know sending stuff off getting rejected getting rejected again getting rejected but it was all part of life's rich tapestry and at the same time i was
Struggling a wee bit with English literature because it was all Wordsworth and Alexander Pope.
And that wasn't what I joined up for.
I joined up for modern fiction.
But eventually I got there.
I kind of stuck in.
There's a word in Scots, thron.
I don't know if you've got it in Ireland.
T-H-R-A-W-N.
It means you're stubborn.
You just won't give in or give up.
And I was definitely thron.
Romantic in that all the English literature students used to drink in the same pub with a couple of the lecturers.
And one night, Miranda swears this is true, she lunged across me to try and snog the student next to me, but she fell short.
And that was that.
And that was 1981.
We didn't get married until 1986, but we are still married and living happily in Edinburgh.
toured with him, did an event in Dublin.
It was kind of on stage.
It was a spoken word to begin with, which was him being interviewed by me.
