One high profile example of someone who got caught is a New Jersey couple who made a fundraiser for a homeless veteran.
According to NBC News, the couple made their GoFundMe account after the woman told a heartwarming story of a homeless man using his last $20 to fill up her tank of gas.
14,000 people donated and the couple spent more than 400,000 of the money that they raised.
This is breaking my heart.
There are also organizations that just pretend to be helping others, but really aren't.
They seem like legit organizations helping a noble cause, but then they end up being frauds.
And one of the biggest cases of charity fraud in the US was of four sham cancer charities everyone is going to hell.
They were in operation from the 1980s to 2015 when the Federal Trade Commission finally shut them down.
And according to court documents between 2008 and 2012, the scammers were able to raise
187 million from donors.
The family who ran the scam, the Reynolds, used that money for cars, luxury cruises, tuition, events, you name it.
This is so crazy to me because leaders of the cult of charity scams are preying on people's desire for connectivity and to feel like they're a part of a community and a village showing up for one another.
They're honestly taking money away from people in need who could be
the subject of those donations.
