Um, I think it's gotta be paired with the capacity to experience at minimum like, you know, pleasure and pain.
Um because if I'm thinking again like about the panpsychist possibilities, like if an electron is conscious, it has just this unimaginably simple kind of consciousness.
I don't think it thereby takes on moral significance.
because it's not really going to have like a welfare associated with it, right?
It's like not going to be like better or worse off if it's not at least able to feel pleasure and pain.
Um and so if if plants merely have some what it's likeness, that doesn't yet mean that they like compete with
conscious animals for moral significance or or something, which is how they're often just so uh like rhetorically, this is how this this move is is often invoked, right?
Because it's usually kind of deployed by people who are very annoyed by ethical vegetarianism or something, right?
And they want to say, Well, but what if plants are conscious?
And so I want to say, Well, what if they are conscious, right?
Do you do you think that they matter like in the way that a pig matters when the pig is in intense pain?

Very very clearly there are good reasons for thinking not.
Because if you don't think that the electron has a state of welfare, then it's not clear what what would harm or benefit the electron, right?

I mean I I suppose the I suppose the thought would be that um
If the electron were conscious, then the the consciousness would take just like this brute simple form because there's not there doesn't seem to be reason to think that the electron is capable of experiencing interesting mental states, right?
So it's just like this unimaginably simple form of awareness, is how pian psychists usually talk about.
