So I started to watch through all those films.
I bought a Criterion box of all those films.
And from there, I got into watching more and more Japanese cinema all the time.
I love how different it is.
I love how different it is.
And then I love to see the similarities actually that are there that would surprise you.
But there's something about, for instance, we could go into talking about ghost stories, right?
Laugh Caddy O'Hearn was an Irish guy, went to Japan in 1890 and he recorded all the ghost stories that he could find, right?
Right.
Fascinating guy.
They call him Koizumi Yakumo in Japan and they teach him in all the schools.
So when you're in primary school, you learn all that stuff.
He wrote Japanese folk stories everywhere that he went, but he wrote them with a very Irish kind of sensibility.
So when you would have been growing up or I would have been growing up in, you know, wherever in Ireland and being, you know, with your grandparents in a cottage somewhere, you know, for me, it was growing up in Pilafuka.
which is the ghost hole, obviously.
So there's a lot of stories about the puka when I was growing up.
And the way people tell ghost stories in Ireland is the way Lafcadio Hearn was telling Japanese ghost stories.
And the Japanese tell those ghost stories in cinema.
So when you watch Japanese horror films and films about, you know, supernatural stuff from Japan, it has this resonance with Irish folk culture in a way that's fascinating.
