So the piano version comes much later in Ryuichi Sakamoto's career.
Ryuichi used to be part of Yellow Magic Orchestra, which is a big synth group from the late 70s through the 80s.
They would have been on the sort of cutting edge at the same time as Kraftwerk, that kind of thing, right?
And throughout Ryuichi's career, he scored a lot of films.
I think famously, you know, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence would be kind of the big one.
The Revenant he did much later down the line.
But when you listen to the earlier versions of his songs from...
Yellow Magic Orchestra some of them are like heavy and really intense synth stuff you know like there's definitely tones in the original version of Thousand Knives that sounds like you know it's like Depeche Mode kind of stuff which is really cool but as he went on in his career and one of the things that I love about certain musicians people who I think are great is that they're able to keep their catalogue of music alive by
doing new versions of it and it changes its meaning and it changes the essence of what it is.
Often people tend to make them harder and tougher and Ryuichi went the opposite way and he took all this stuff that was very intense and then he turned it into this beautiful, kind of upbeat, quite light piano music.
And I just think that's amazing.
It's so cool.
It's a testament to him as a musician.

He was just the most beautiful guy ever.
He was from down in Cork and I met him down in Connolly's of Lep through Sam McNichol, who owns the place, also one of my best friends.
