I'm delighted to be joined by one of our great young actors, Jack Rayner. You're very welcome. Great to be here. Jack, you're building up such a great, varied, interesting kind of body of work. Like you've done the Hollywood blockbuster thing with Transformers.

Then you've done Quality TV, The Perfect Couple on Netflix with Nicole Kidman. People will have seen The Peripheral on Amazon, which is another terrific kind of interesting kind of show. Then you've done interesting movies, Midsommar, Macbeth. Great Irish films like What Richard Did, Sing Street, Lee Cronin's The Mummy just recently. And then you're back in cinemas now with John Carney's Power Ballad. You look like you're having good fun in that. So it's not your standard career. You're an interesting kind of guy. So we're going to talk about all of that today and your journey so far. And we're going to do it through five songs that have special associations for you. And can I say, I know taste is relative, but you've great taste in music.
Thanks. Yeah. We usually start with childhood. So you're actually born in America. Do you remember anything about Colorado?
A little bit. Yeah, just bits and pieces, small images. I remember being with my grandfather at the, there was a small private airport in Longmont in Colorado. And I remember a red plane that we used to go and stand down outside the airfield watching this red plane taking off all the time. And so I have vivid images of that in my mind. But I wasn't there for very long. You know, I came back to Ireland when I was about two and a half. Yeah.
You came back with your grandparents. Came back with my grandparents. They were kind of tough times for you and your mom, weren't they?
You know, I think it was tough on everybody in the 90s. You know, there wasn't a huge amount of prosperity for people here at the time. We probably didn't have a tougher time than anybody else. But yeah, I moved home with my grandparents in 1994, came to live in Valley Mountain, County Wicklow, and grew up in that community down there. And I've moved back there, you know. I'm living back down there again now. So there must have been something good about the place. Yeah. Is that important to you, yeah? Hugely. Back down there. Hugely, yeah. How come? It's very important when you spend so much time away from home and your lifestyle has such... inconsistencies in it I think it's very important to be part of a community and a community that is completely unrelated to what you're doing with your career you know like that does take up a huge part of my life my work but I want that to be a part of my life I don't want it to be my entire reason for everything you know what I mean yeah so for me it's really important and I'm very lucky because I get to be at home long enough to never get sick of it
And at the same time, I get to go away on adventures and do other things. But by the time I get to the end of a job, I'm always pining to get back there. I'm always dying to see the lake and to see Muller Clee Vaughan and, you know, like just the lambs are outside the window of the house. And I live a mile away from the house I grew up in, you know, it's really special.
And is your mum still down there as well?
No, no, no. My family, they all live away now. I'm the last one.
Okay, yeah. You and her are very tight, aren't you? It was just you and her initially when you were... It was me and her, yeah, when I was a kid.
How did Jack's childhood influence his path to acting?
Does that make a special kind of like us against the world kind of thing?
I suppose it does, yeah. You know, any single mother and child relationship is usually pretty strong, you know?
Yeah. And Camille, you always wanted to be an actor, yeah? What was that impulse in you, do you think?
I had this sense always, you know, like I grew up watching, I was an only child and I grew up watching a lot of TV and films and stuff. And I was always enthralled by what was going on inside the box. It looked so exciting and so far beyond what was going on in my world. And I was always wanting to be there. Do you know what I mean?
