That all came crashing down, as he said, with the slaughterhouse cases.

They started out in the 70s and became really institutionalized with Pleasant versus Ferguson in the 1890s.

And then, of course, the vigilantes that overtook the country at the beginning of the last century that led to lynchings and other kinds of things that all started back in the 1870s.

Well, I don't think that we're in this fight alone.

And I just don't believe that we will do ourselves justice if we don't pay close attention to the fact

that we do have allies in this battle.

I meet them all over the country.

I've been traveling quite a bit with my book tour, and I'm not done traveling.

And I know there are a lot of people that were joined in this fight.

We have got to make room for them, give comfort to them,

and not demand that they come into the fight on our terms, but meet them where they are and hopefully bring them along in this fight so we can win it together.

We numerically need help.

And we should not allow this to be a Democratic Party issue.

It's not.

This is a democracy issue.

And everybody in this country ought to feel a part of this trek toward a more perfect union.

And sit down around the table with as many people as you possibly can, get as many groups as we possibly can into this process, and let's fight.

I always say, you may not win when you fight.

But if you don't fight, you will not win.

And so I think Ada is right about that.
