After 1998 and the Good Friday Agreement, people are going out there to dump guns, to dump papers, things that they want to disappear.
Into a sinkhole.
Yeah, sort of.
In my head, it's like one of those garbage disposal units in a kitchen.
You put something in and it just magically disappears.
And there is an island of people caught between life and death, sort of, I call them almost dead, so in a limbo.
There's an island of sleepers.
So these are women who have experienced trauma and they've just gone into this kind of coma state.
And that's a real condition.
There's been a lot of, particularly in Scandinavia for some reason, folks who've escaped from a kind of conflict society, a conflict experience.
Once they feel safe, they just go into this deep sleep and they don't wake up for years.
Yeah.
So I use some of these examples and I think probably the most disturbing of the islands is it's called Tom's Heart and it's a suicide island, which is based on the Japanese suicide forest where people go to take their own lives in a kind of convenient, organised way.
And it's a desperately sad place.
But for me, all of those islands exist as extended metaphors for suicide.
Parts of the kind of post-conflict trauma that we experience in the North.
So it starts in 58 and it's most of the novel set in 2017 where there's just a small handful of people still living on the Ark.
Well, no, the thing is it has actually done its job.
So when it gets to 1998 and the peace agreement comes in, a lot of the people that saw it sanctuary think we want to return.
It feels safe to move back to, they call it the mainland, but it's actually Northern Ireland.
