So that was wonderful to have those conversations.
Then I stumbled upon this map of kind of the lay of the land in the middle of the loch.
And it had this archipelago, there's that weird word again, of raised pieces of land in the middle.
So they're called flats.
And if the waterline had been dropped, these would have come to the surface.
And actually, one of the women I talked to, her grandfather was
had been around to confirm that the last Victorian drainage scheme, these islands had emerged.
So me being me, I have to go into imagination mode.
And I started to think, well, who would have lived in those islands if they had emerged?
And I instantly thought, well, this is the period of the troubles in the north.
Perhaps some people might have sought sanctuary out there.
And I very quickly got the idea of
community of people from mixed marriages, gay couples, people who didn't feel safe on what they call mainland Northern Ireland, setting up home up there.
And then you need when you're writing a novel, you need a kind of chief voice to carry you through it.
And for me, that became the Connellys, who are a family of anthropologists.
who go out to kind of take notes and observe this community that's there.
When you ask me about research, I kind of smile because I am the world's laziest researchers.
Like my last few books, I've just written about what I know in my backyard.
For this one, there was a degree more research and my research phase was kind of in two spots.
I read a few books to start with just to get myself up and running.
