I took a job over there in a church in 2005 and very luckily landed in Portland, Oregon, which is one of the most open-minded, liberal and creative spots to land in.

And those four years I was there, that was a really informative period for me.

Were you active?
I was working there for a very liberal church and I was the arts pastor.
So I actually worked with some really high end artists like one of Tarantino's camera women.
and people who were high up in design work.
So for me, there was a space there where I could see how your faith didn't have to be this restrictive, small-minded thing that I'd grown up with in the North.
Yeah, I think community is hugely important and it's still something I shout about when you talk about those women from the North who are writing at the minute.
They're all my friends and that just eggs you on to keep getting better and better.
But in Portland, for the first time, I encountered this lively group of artists and I'd never met a writer before.
So to suddenly be in the company of them and sharing ideas and that just felt really liberating.
I think I've thought about this a lot, Darryl, and my position is I want to be a critical friend.
