The point is that from a very, very, very young age, I loved animals, was interested in animals, read about animals, read about Dr. Doolittle, read the books about Tarzan of the Apes.

In 77, I'm going back now to a time when TV wasn't invented.
So books.
So reading about Tarzan of the Apes, falling in love with him, frightfully jealous when he married that other stupid, wimpy Jane.
Yeah.
And so deciding, though, that I would grow up, go to Africa, live with animals and write books about them.
Only my mother supported me.
It was a crazy idea.
World War II was raging.
And, you know, we didn't have any money in my family.
And Africa was the dark continent.
And I was a girl, for heaven's sake.
So, of course people laughed at me, but not my mother.
If you really want something, you work hard, you never give up, you find a way.
You cannot imagine how wrong you are.
We were a very, very close family.
