In the book, we talk about leader as an architect, an architect in a very broad sense of creating the environments where people are willing and able to want to innovate.
And we pick those words intentionally, because there's a lot of people with the ability to innovate, but they don't have the will or the motivation, whether it's the incentives or whatever it is.
On the other side, like my example of the job application, there are a lot of people with a will,
but not necessarily with the self-awareness, the experience around the ability to do that.
So absolutely talent is very, very important.
However, what I would say to this is, you know, you can copy products and services and it's just getting easier.
You can buy talent.
It's just at what price you can poach it.
But there's something really, really fascinating, Tommy, about culture, right?
Because I've studied culture.
I've been a part of amazing companies with culture.
A colleague of mine, Greg Brandow, is the former CTO of Pixar and worked very closely with Steve Jobs when Steve started Next.
Greg was one of the first employees.
And so he kind of bottled up a bit of the ethos of Steve and applies that to the projects that we work on.
And we have these fascinating conversations around,
there's this thing when you talk about culture, because it's intangible, it's abstract, it can put people to sleep, right?
But at the same time, it can be the one thing that is impossible to copy, buy or poach.
And so that's, to me, I think, you know, whether you're a five-person startup or you're Walmart, culture does matter and culture does trump everything.
So
Like look at Salesforce.
