That was alarming to him.
He literally lost sleep.
So one of the first things that he did was a strategic reframe around the purpose of MasterCard.
MasterCard up until that point for years and years and years and decades was a credit card services company.
And therefore,
That's why people are like, innovation's irrelevant.
We're in a mature business, low margin, competing innovation, it's not relevant.
And he said, hey, we need to make a big change.
And the big change is going to be we're going to pivot and we're going to focus on being a tech company and a tech leader in the payment space.
Instead of competing in these back alley knife fights with our competitors over the same customers time and time again,
Let's go after the real opportunity, which is the unbanked.
And to do that, he had to do many, many things and get the organization to see that purpose.
And with that reframe, now all of a sudden people understood, okay, hey, for MasterCard to have some place in that, let alone be number one and lead it, lots of things had to change in the culture.
And he instituted this thing called the MasterCard Way, which was really about a relentless focus on customer centricity.
and institutionalized a completely different way of funding all of the programs across MasterCard.
So going forward, 50% of funding from the CFO focused on core business, 25% on changing some of the diversification of their portfolio.
But the big thing was 25% of all resources is a Fortune 100 company going forward towards the co-creation of the future of MasterCard.
and innovation.
So without that, like groundwork and the clarity of purpose, it could have continued to be just very chaotic and turbulent.
And to your point, I developing things that were irrelevant or, you know, distractions from what they were doing is the core, right?
