The thing people have trouble understanding, no, that they aren't willing to accept, is that everything, everything we did was consensual.
No one who was there, who took part, didn't want... But I'm getting ahead of myself.
For me, it started innocuous enough with oranges.
I loved the tactility of separating the pith from the pulp, using my teeth to break the envelope and let the white fall away, leaving the sweet, juicy flesh free and unmarred by that bitterness.
Clementines were the starter pack once I graduated away from canned mandarins and their agonizingly saccharine syrup.
Easy to pull apart, segment, and eat, bit by bit, if I liked, and not have to worry a whit about seeds.
Navels were a step up, though sometimes you got the disappointments that were desiccated in the corners, like the parentheses of a pair of chapped lips, cracked and flaking white with the taste like orange-scented paper.
No, the masterclass were blood oranges, no question.
