They had a shorter season than the rest, and that scarcity made them precious.
They were meant to be savored slowly, and I liked to take my time dissecting them.
You had to be careful, though.
Not just the way the maroon juice stained the tips of your fingers, fading to a gently emphatic shade of magenta once it had time to dry, but the pith stuck something fierce inside.
As with anything worth waiting for, worthy of love, you had to take it slow, be patient, and use your tools wisely.
You couldn't just pry it apart uncouth as if you were cracking open a fortune cookie.
You needed to find the weak point and gently apply pressure until the outside shape fell away and what you had was exquisite and tender beneath the cobweb membrane containing it.
You need to coax it to the surface, let it happen, and softly follow through.
Oh, I was good at what I did.
Very good.
Occasionally I would fuck with grapes.
Peeled grapes are a classic and harder than they look.
Pit fruit is hardcore and just a mess.
Usually not worth it either, unless you're into prune juice.
One time I tried working a durian, and I jacked myself right up, and then my place stank like moldy sweat socks soaked in onion juice for weeks.
Never again.
Can I say what came next?
I mean, it was a lot of things.
