So in 2010, I actually spent a month in South Africa.

And...

I was there to cover the world cup and the beauty of covering the world cup is that you get to see basically the full country because matches are all over the country.

So I went to Soweto.

I was in Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, Sin City.

I mean, I did quite a bit of traveling around there, both for professional reasons and for personal reasons.

I spent time in the townships.

I did all of that.

So, and before I came in, before,

once I knew I was going to be assigned this, this is when I was at ESPN.

And once I knew I was going to be assigned to go to the world cup, I made sure I read four books about South Africa.

One of which of course was Nelson Mandela's.

And just to get a better sense of the history, the texture of this place that I was going to, because they didn't want me to just cover the matches.

They wanted me to write about this from like a sports culture standpoint.

And one of Mandela's dreams was,

And he wanted to do that through sports.

The World Cup was also special because it was Mandela's last public appearance.

And he came to the final.

Don't give me the line about which two countries played in the final because I cannot recall.
