I mean, that's the stereotype, right?

But it's wrong in two important ways.

So first, that thinking lets people in wealthy countries think, uh, well, it's somebody else's problem.

And second, it reduces a deeply complex practice down to ignorance.

And that's not just inaccurate, it blinds us to what's actually keeping it alive.

So Jaha De Kore, who is a UN women goodwill ambassador and FGM survivor, she's spoken about this directly.

She says there are still a lot of misconceptions about FGM, like it's practiced by ignorant Africans and people, you know, quote unquote over there who are uneducated.

But she underwent FGM in Gambia when she was one week old.

She spent her adult life fighting to end the practice everywhere.

Well, not always.

I mean, F GM is documented in ninety four countries.

That's a lot.

That's a lot most of the world.

Yeah.

It happens in parts of Asia, the Middle East, Europe

And the Americas.

So for example, Miriam Safi, she was born in Texas.

She was cut at age seven on a family vacation to India.

Her aunt apparently lured her into a basement clinic with the offer of a chocolate bar or something.

I mean she was seven years old.
