It actually predates Islam by centuries.

It's also been practiced by some Christian communities and by communities with no particular religion at all.

So the common thread isn't theology, it's culture.

Well, because it's a useful mechanism of controlling a woman's body, right?

Saying God requires this is a much more powerful enforcer than saying our tradition requires this.

It puts the practice beyond question, beyond the reach of ordinary social debate, because, you know, if it's a divine mandate, opposition becomes dissent.
