But the good news is religious leaders are among the most effective allies in ending FGM precisely because of this dynamic.

So when the framing is religious, the counterframing also needs to be religious.

There's an imam in the village of Tongoy in Mali who has made it his mission to speak against FGM every single Friday before prayer.

And his community has completely abandoned the practice.

So when the most trusted religious voice in a community says, Hey, this is messed up.

This is not what our faith requires, the ground shifts.

Who was the first person to do that?

I mean it's just so bizarre.

I mean, that's probably so close.

It just it's so hard to wrap my mind around that somebody wouldn't be like, Or we could wash more thoroughly.

But I mean, one of the more harmful myths of FGM is the medicalization of it.

And that's accelerating.

So earlier I mentioned this is usually done by traditional practitioners, but one of the biggest changes in recent years is that FGM has become increasingly medicalized.

I mean, today about a quarter of all girls who have recently undergone FGM were cut by healthcare workers.

And in Egypt, it's as high as like seventy-five percent.

Yeah, doctors, nurses, other licensed healthcare providers.

I mean, this is a really new trend.

Well that's what makes the trend so disturbing, right?
