Yeah.

It happens very quietly, very secretly.

So there are documented cases of midwives and healthcare providers performing a symbolic ritual, what's called mock FGM, or I've seen it called whisper of the blade.

Which means no cutting at all.

So they bring a girl into the room, they close the door, they let everyone outside believe the ritual is happening, but they never make a cut.

Yeah, correct.

So the girl comes back out with, you know, a bandage or whatever.

Everyone believes the obligation's been fulfilled.

But the provider has secretly spared the child.

And in communities where FGM is normalized, it's an incredibly controversial form of harm reduction.

Sure.

So I read some accounts that in communities where the secret gets out, it's, you know, bad news for the provider, but it's also secretive.

I haven't been able to verify specific cases.

Plus, if you're not doing the cut to

A five year old, they don't know the difference.

So unless you're being inspected by your parents after, nobody's the wiser.

I mean, maybe they're relieved, maybe they're in on it.

It's really hard to get the information clearly.
