But UNICEF has interviewed several anonymous midwives who admitted they felt conflicted about lying to the families, but believed refusing outright would just simply send the families somewhere more dangerous.

I mean it really is.

And it's why organizations like the WHO and UNICEF ultimately oppose even symbolic procedures.

So their concern is that if healthcare workers participate in any version of FGM, even one that causes no physical injury, it risks reinforcing the idea that the practice itself is acceptable.

So everyone agrees the child should be protected.

The disagreement is whether harm reduction today delays ending the practice tomorrow.

Yeah, sure, but it's completely

categorically wrong to cut a girl.

You know, there's just no safe form of genital mutilation.

Medicalization doesn't eliminate the harm.

So the goal can't just be to prevent the next injury.

It has to be ending the practice altogether.

So arguably it makes it more harmful because it's a veil of legitimacy.

But the WHO's position is that it actually legitimizes the practice instead of ending it, so even though we think it's compassionate, it's not the best solution.

You know, there was a twelve year old girl named Nada Hassan Abdel Maksood.

She bled to death at a private clinic in the town of Manfalau in Egypt.

So it's awful and it's it would have been better if it was a mock FGM, but

That still happens because the practice is still done.

You know, her family took her there for the procedure, thinking they were doing the right thing by d getting it done by a medical professional, and she still died.

So there's just no clinical context in which cutting healthy genital tissue from a non consenting child is medicine.
