Unfortunately, accountability is almost non existent.

So in most countries where medicalization is common, doctors face little or no professional discipline.

Medical schools should train students explicitly that this isn't medicine, but I couldn't find any medical school that covers FGM, even a little bit.

And must be grounds for losing your license.

And that institutional failure is a serious accountability gap.

I mean both probably exist, right?

So we know from interviews and the WHO that many healthcare providers genuinely believe they're reducing harm.

Others are responding to patient demand or community pressure.

And yeah, sometimes financial incentives.

So human motivation in general, it's just messier than simply one explanation.

Yeah, I think so too.

But you know, because if people are doing something horrific while believing they're helping, simply telling them they're evil, it's not going to change their behavior.

The WHO addresses this directly and they actually created an international day of zero tolerance for FGM.

Medical practitioners carrying out FGM, you know, they're only causing harm, full stop.

But it's practiced, surprisingly, in the UK, in Europe, and in the United States.

So assuming modernization fixes it is dangerous because it makes everyone think someone else will solve it.

Mean there is good news, sure.

Young people are significantly less supportive of FGM than their parents and grandparents.
