If you think about the demographic shifts that are happening, first of all, people are living longer.
And with that comes disability, chronic diseases, dementia.
I think dementia rates are estimated to have doubled between 2014 and 2050.
Doubled.
Doubled.
And the family has changed.
Baby boomers are aging rapidly, so there's this huge number of people who are requiring care.
But at the same time, we've had smaller families, so there's fewer people per person requiring care to do that work.
Smaller families scattered over the country in ways that we haven't been before.
More debt.
All of these are understandable reasons why this problem is just continuing to accelerate.
problem is a multi-system problem.
It doesn't start or end with the healthcare system.
It doesn't start or end with employers.
It doesn't start or end with communities, faith communities, et cetera.
And it doesn't start or end with legislators.
But all of these groups have to come together, like any movement or any sustainable change, to integrate the efforts of each of these systems to do better and to connect to each other so that we create that safety net that these family caregivers need and deserve.
It also takes change from the top, even though there isn't really one top.
There's all these different systems.
But when you have someone coming in like Joe Biden, who was a caregiver for many, many, many years to his two young sons when his daughter and wife died, and then to both of his parents, and then to his son.
