We don't have those kinds of benefits following patients home for out-of-hospital basic support and we have to change that.

Yeah, Rick was doing it all.

And, you know, Rick was a middle class guy.

I mean, he's not wealthy.

And he was completely caught in that middle place where there was nothing there to support him.

People from our community would do what they could.

They'd bring a casserole, but not stuff that really would have been helpful to decompress him and give him a little bit of time to recharge.

And don't forget, so many people who are caregivers have their own challenges.

Either they're sandwich generation, so they've got younger people to worry about as well, or they themselves are older spouses who have their own health concerns and their own issues.

So we're just sort of piling a whole variety of things on top of an already difficult job.

But don't forget, Rick is one of the lucky ones because he only did it for nine weeks.

I'm kind of still learning about this myself.

There are profound consequences for caregivers that fall within a variety of different categories.

Financial, emotional, physical, medical.

Let's just talk about financial.

Caregivers spend on average $6,000 a year of their own money to care for a loved one.

They spend twice that amount if they don't live in the home with the loved one, which is kind of counterintuitive, but it's a chunk of money.

They also have huge challenges with their own employment, if they're employed.
