I mean, that was not a conscious thought.
But of course, all of that is true.
It came to me in a dream.
And it's the only ending that I've dreamt before I've got there.
It was the idea that there was going to be this thing that had been on the stage the entire time, this drum that gets revealed.
It's a bit in the middle of the play where he tells a story about meeting a giant and the giant gives him his earring and the earring is the drum.
And Ginger says, well, come on, where is this drum?
And he says, you're sitting on it.
So there's been something hidden under a blanket at the heart of the play the whole time.
And that that thing...
at the end of the play that was sitting there all along is going to be the thing that summons the giants back.
And then I came up with that whole idea and it was like, okay, well, I've now got to build it all around that.
And so why that was the case, why I felt, I mean, I read books afterwards about what drums signify and where they stand in ecstatic ceremony and how that lined up with my experience
earliest memories which is a fascination with rock and roll from the age of like three or four and I thought you know here we go this is how you end a play you end a play where maybe they're coming and maybe they're not what's that sound is that is that the giants I'd love to ask about working with with Mark Rylance because is it true that he didn't have an understudy
He didn't.
Well, I mean, I think that Mark, I remember him telling me that he said for him, the stage was the only place where nothing could go wrong.
And I kind of feel like even if he'd had like a temperature of 105 or 160, he's going on because like whatever happens, at least he knows he's safe.
Yeah.
I think he really meant that.
I think that his experience around time when he became an actor, the stage was probably the safest place for him.
